2024 Prospective Board of Education Trustee Information
Bedford Central School District Clerk Sandra Speyer has announced that two residents have submitted nominating petitions that qualify them for the Board of Education election on May 21, 2024. There are two (2) open trustee seats on the board each for a full term of three (3) years commencing on July 1, 2024 and expiring on June 30, 2027. All seats are at-large, meaning candidates do not run for specific seats. The two (2) community members who have submitted petitions are Steven Matlin (incumbent) and Lisa Mitchell.
The Bedford Central School Districts annual Budget Vote and Trustee Elections will take place on Tuesday, May 21, 2024.

There are two (2) trustee seats on the board. Candidacy to run for the School Board must be declared by 5pm on Monday, April 22, 2024. The two (2) seats are each for a full term of three (3) years commencing on July 1, 2024 and expiring on June 30, 2027. All seats are at-large, meaning candidates do not run for specific seats. The two (2) present incumbents are Mr. Rob Mazurek and Mr. Steve Matlin.
Candidate packets are available at the Administration Building on the Fox Lane Campus with the District Clerk, Monday-Friday 8:30am-3:30pm. You may also download and print this information packet. Nominating petitions must be filed with the District Clerk, Sandra Speyer (or her designee), by 5PM on Monday, April 22, 2024 at the Administration Building at 632 South Bedford Road, Bedford, NY 10506.
All candidates must have the following qualifications:
- Must be able to read and write;
- Must be a US Citizen;
- Must be at least 18 years old;
- Must be a qualified voter of the school district;
- Must be a resident of the school district continuously for one year before the election;
- Must not reside in the same household with a family member who is already a member of the school board;
- May not be a current employee of the school district;
- May not simultaneously hold another incompatible public office.
In accordance with Section 2018 of the State Education Law, nominating petitions for this election require the signature of at least 52 people, which represents 2% of 2,584, the number of individuals who voted in the previous annual election of the members of the Board of Education. To identify a qualified signature, it must be legible. Please ask each signer to also PRINT their name, and the residence should be listed by location, not mailing address (i.e., 100 Bedford Road, not RR# or Box 123).
Each petition must be directed to the Clerk of the School District; must be signed by two percent (2%) of the 2,584 voters (52 signatures) who voted in the previous election; must state the residence of each signer; must be filed in the Office of the District Clerk in the Administration Building on the Fox Lane Campus between the hours of 8:30am and 3:30pm on or before 5pm Monday, April 22, 2024 and must state the name and residence of the candidate. The District is closed on this day, however the District Clerk’s Office will be open from 8am-5pm on Monday, April 22, 2024.
The filing deadline for nomination petitions is 5pm on Monday, April 22, 2024. Petitions should be brought to the District Clerk in the Administration Building on Fox Lane Campus.
Any candidate for election to the Board of Education must file sworn election expenditure and contribution statements with the District Clerk (and the Commissioner of Education in the event expenditures and/or contributions exceed $500) in accordance with the provisions of Article 32, Sections 1528 and 1529 of the Education Law. In addition, candidates must report, within 24 hours, any contribution or loan in excess of $1000 received by the candidate within five days prior to the election.
Filing deadlines are:
- Thirty days prior to the election: April 22, 2024 (first statement)
- Five days prior to the election: May 16, 2024 (second statement)
- Twenty days following the election(do not count Memorial Day): June 10, 2024 (third statement)
