SPRING SPOTLIGHT COURSE SELECTION FOR 2024-2025:
In early January teachers reviewed their department course options with students. Throughout the months of January and February, students individually met with their counselor to select courses for the 2024-2025 school year. You should have received an email to review a student’s selected courses on the parent/student portal.
Remaining Course Selection Timeline:
-
March - ALL OVERRIDE FORMS WERE DUE BY March 22 for any student who did not agree with their teacher course recommendation.
-
June - Based on final course selections students should make sure they have information about summer reading (all students), and summer assignments (certain AP and Honors level courses).
-
Late August - 2024-2025 student schedules will be posted on the student and parent portals. Any requests for changes should be made at that time, ideally prior to school starting. The Add/Drop period will close by the end of the second week of school.
To view classes and course descriptions, please view our 2024-2025 Course Catalog .
WORKING PAPERS:
The FLHS Guidance Receptionist, Ms. Barghout, processes working papers. Students can either pick up a paper application in the front of guidance or print out a copy from our website: https://www.bcsdny.org/Page/2319 . Once completed, students should submit the application to Ms. Barghout in the guidance department. Spring is a very busy time for working papers - don’t delay! Please allow up to 2 school days for working papers to be processed - so students shouldn’t wait until the last minute!
Summer Job Opportunities: Students can view the bulletin board by the front door of Guidance with opportunities for jobs and community service events.
TECH CENTER:In February, Rori Mackie and Jen Hickey brought 70 students to tour the PNW BOCES Tech Center. If your student is planning to apply to the BOCES Tech Center for the 2024-2025 school year, below is the new student application and medical forms. If your child did not attend the tour and/or you did not attend the parent Open House you may take a virtual tour of their facilities through this link: virtual tour video
Click below to begin your BOCES Tech Center Application and Medical Form:
Once you have completed your application, you can drop it off to Guidance.
FINAL EXAMSLocal final exams will take place June 11, 12, & 13th and in most cases are 12% of a student’s final grade.
Regents exams will run from June 14th - June 25th and are also 12% of a student’s final grade. Students only attend school during the Regents exam time frame on days that they have exams. More information will be provided by the high school administration as it gets closer.
As students prepare for 4th quarter and exams we wanted to highlight the various academic supports that exist at Fox Lane.
SENIOR PARENT REMINDERS
COLLEGE DECISIONS:
The National Enrollment Deposit Deadline is May 1st. Unless a school has delayed their deadline, college-bound seniors need to deposit at ONE college by May 1st. Due to significant delays in processing the FAFSA this year many (but not all schools) are allowing students to deposit on May 15th or even June 1st. Since not all schools have issued an extension it’s important for a family to be aware of the various deadlines.
Additionally, most schools will have both in person and virtual events for accepted students. Seniors should take part in those events to help make the decision that is best for them. This is especially important for seniors who were not able to visit a school in the past. Seniors who intend to defer their acceptance and/or would like to consider a gap or PG year should let their counselor know so we can work together on a plan. Schools will have a process for requesting a deferral which would need to take place prior to the deposit deadline.
We will still celebrate the National College Decision Day on Wednesday, May 1st with a special senior lunch and lawn sign activity provided by senior parents. Seniors can celebrate their college choice by wearing college gear to school on May 1st. We will have ongoing opportunities for seniors who have not yet made a decision by that date. We will be celebrating ALL choices on May 1st regardless of a student’s chosen path. Ms. Oricchio will be emailing seniors more information about that day soon. Go Seniors!
Once students have heard back from all of their colleges and have finalized their plans for next year, they should update Naviance with their college results. Seniors should log into Naviance and click on the "edit" pencil to let us know what decisions they received, and to set their college choice for next year, or they can follow the directions to complete the “Graduation Survey” (which will be emailed to seniors in April). By setting an attending school in Naviance we will send a final transcript to that college (prior to July 1st). No additional request needs to be made by a student for a final transcript.
QUARTER 4 REMINDERS:
Senior grades continue to matter! Just a reminder that all college acceptances are conditional on comparable grades from the time of a student’s application. Seniors: Please don't put yourself in a situation where you get a "what happened???" letter from your intended college.
FINANCIAL AID:
As you may know, financial aid packages have been delayed this year due to issues with processing the FAFSA. Hopefully during the month of April the college financial aid offices will be able to put together these packages for review. Students should log into the college’s portal for an award letter, or to check to see if additional information is required. Please contact a financial aid office directly if you have any questions or concerns or would like to request a “professional review” to reconsider a financial aid package. Here is an online resource to help you understand more about financial aid packages: College Costs . We have also shared the following financial aid comparison tool with the seniors: comparison tool . Additionally, the SUNY system and HESC are hosting a series of online virtual events in April and May - SUNY Financial Aid events and HESC Financial Aid events . Due to FAFSA delays many colleges have created their own forms. Additionally if a student plans to attend a college in NY state they must also complete a TAP application. Much of this information is either emailed to a student or posted on their college portal. Please ensure that your senior is checking their emails regularly to make sure a college has all the information needed to provide an accurate financial aid package.
COMMUNITY SERVICE:
Seniors are required to complete 20 hours of community service for graduation. Students can log their service hours here: Community Service Form . ASPIRE students must submit their hours prior to leaving on their senior internship.
MENTAL HEALTH IN COLLEGE:
College Transition & Your Mental Health Journey - Pace University, April 10
Discover strategies, stories, and a supportive community tailored to high school students, their parents, and high school and college counselors. This opportunity empowers your educational transition, equipping you not just for academic success but also for a flourishing mental health journey.
JUNIOR PARENT REMINDERS GROUP GUIDANCE/COLLEGE PLANNING MEETINGS:
Junior Group Guidance sessions are ending this week after 11 sessions! In our last session, we will be sharing a Junior Spring Checklist with items for juniors to focus on over the next few months. At this time juniors should have completed their individual college meeting with their counselor. If they have not, or if a student would like an additional meeting(s), they should reach out to their counselor at any time to schedule an appointment. Families can also contact their counselor for a family college meeting.
TEST OPTIONAL POLICIES:
We have already begun receiving word from many colleges that standardized testing will be optional again next year. With that said, you shouldn't assume that standardized testing will be optional at all schools next year as some have reintroduced testing requirements. Bottomline: check individual college websites for the most up to date information! Please make sure you register for the SAT or ACT if you haven't done so already.
PARENT BRAG SHEET:
In early March, parents of Juniors received an email titled, “Parent Brag Sheet.” We ask that you please respond to these Brag Sheet questions by May 1st, as your child’s counselor will use the information you provide to inform their comprehensive letter of recommendation for your child. If you have any questions, please reach out to your child’s counselor.
STUDENT QUESTIONNAIRE:
All juniors received a student questionnaire to complete in early March. If your child has not already completed the Student Questionnaire, they must do so by May 1st.
COLLEGE N’ COFFEE:
Please join us for an informal virtual conversation from 8:00am-9:00am on May 3rd where counselors will answer any questions junior parents/guardians might have about the college process. Here is the meeting link for the event (which was also emailed to parents on 3/20/24): meet.google.com/irm-tgvn-dzc
COLLEGE VISIT ABSENCES! ** NEW POLICY**Please note that all grade levels are now entitled to 4 “reassignments” (non-tallied absences) per class for college visits. When a student will miss school for a college visit their parents/guardians should contact the attendance office as they would for any other excused absence. Those dates will not be tallied if a student’s absences exceed our attendance limits.
FINANCIAL AID:
Families interested in learning more about financial aid should register for a free Financial Aid event through SUNY or HESC. The virtual events are currently being offered throughout April and May: SUNY Financial Aid events and HESC Financial Aid events . We highly recommend that any parent interested in applying for financial aid in the fall attend one of these virtual events. Additionally, here are some financial aid basics that were discussed with juniors during Group Guidance.
SOPHOMORE PARENT REMINDERS
Sophomore Group Guidance will run during the months of April and May. Students will meet with their counselor in small group sessions. The focus of these meetings will be career exploration and we will use a variety of inventories to help students explore their interests and abilities as they research career options. We will also discuss extracurricular activities and create a draft resume for students that they will continue to build throughout their junior and senior years.
PSATS:
Believe it or not your children will be taking the PSATs in just under 6 months. As of October 2023, this exam and subsequent SATs are now computer-based tests. Additional details will be provided in the fall. Students who would like to get a headstart on some informal SAT preparation this summer can access Khan Academy for some good free prep.
FRESHMAN PARENT UPDATE
It is difficult to imagine we are nearing the end of your child’s 9th grade year! We hope that the transition for our newest Foxes went as smooth as possible and that your students found any necessary support from your school counselor. The School Counseling team has enjoyed getting to know the class of 2027 through our Freshman Guidance sessions and individual meetings.
Through our group sessions, as well as during individual meetings, we covered our Freshman Guidance curriculum including Social/Emotional Learning and the Role of the School Counselor, School Procedures, Graduation Requirements, Extracurricular Activities, and Course Selection for 10th grade. Freshmen should reach out to their counselor at any time if they have questions and/or would like to schedule an appointment. They should have also joined our Class of 2027 Group Guidance Google Classroom. They can email their counselor if they are missing the “join code.”

STANDARDIZED TESTING
PSATs:
PSATs scores were released on November 6th. If the student provided their mobile number during exam registration, they should have received a text message giving them access to the Big Future School App. They can view scores in the app or by logging into their College Board account. Scores have also been uploaded into students’ Naviance accounts.
If a student does not already have one, they should create a College Board account at www.collegeboard.org using the email address they used on the PSAT registration (NOT their BCSD email). The scores should automatically be filtered into your account this way.
To learn more about your scores, please review this handout: Understanding your PSAT Scores .
SAT vs. ACT:
The student should consult with their counselor to develop an individual standardized test plan, and should then register at either www.collegeboard.org or at www.act.org depending on their plan. For an overview of the standardized testing options you can review this Standardized Testing Handout .
TEST PREP:
We have compiled a list of local test prep companies that you can access on our website . Fox Lane High School does not endorse any particular test prep company. Families should discuss what options will work best for them.
As a reminder here are links for free SAT and ACT Prep:
Digital SAT Practice and Preparation through College Board’s Bluebook App already downloaded on student’s Chromebooks
Free SAT prep (Khan Academy* )
Free ACT prep (Kaplan)
*As of 12/31/2023 Khan Academy will no longer link to a student’s PSAT Score Report to customize test prep. However, College Board’s Bluebook app will provide students who take practice tests with a custom link to review their answers – and corresponding rationales and practice resources – on Khan Academy. Students will still be able to use Khan Academy to prepare for the new Digital SAT through our two Official Digital SAT Prep courses (Math and Reading and Writing ). These courses will allow students to:
-
Read articles, watch videos, and work on thousands of practice exercises for every skill evaluated in the tests
-
Take quizzes, unit tests, and course challenges to track and prove your mastery level in all skills
-
Track both time spent on SAT prep and mastery data for all of the different skills in each Digital SAT course
TESTING ACCOMMODATIONS :
If the student is approved for testing accommodations through the College Board, remember to enter their SSD number when they register. If they receive testing accommodations in school, and would like to request accommodations for the ACT, please email the counselor as per the ACT instructions after you register.
TEST FEE WAIVERS :
If the student receives Free or Reduced Lunch please reach out to the counselor for a fee waiver.
SENIOR PARENT REMINDERS
ED/EA DECISIONS :
College decisions are starting to roll in! If a student was accepted through an ED program (yay!) they will need to IMMEDIATELY withdraw from any other college that they submitted an application to. Most of the time this can be done through a school’s portal or by sending an email to admissions. We know there are lots of highs and lows during this time, so students should make an appointment with their counselor as needed to discuss any decisions and future plans.
If a student was deferred from an ED/EA school they should follow up with an email to the college, reiterating their strong interest in attending and they should include any updates – both academically and extracurricularly.
NAVIANCE UPDATES:
Many deadlines have now passed, however for any remaining schools (January 1, 15, February 1, or Rolling) students should have completed transcript requests in Naviance at this point. Please also make sure that if it is a Common App college, that the student has also added it to their Common App account. We cannot submit materials unless they are listed on both Naviance and Common App.
Seniors should also update Naviance with all admissions decisions. They should go into Naviance and click on the "edit" pencil to let us know what decision they received. Students need to check their email regularly and often. We know this is challenging given the amount of information that is being sent through email. However, many schools will communicate with students via email. Additionally, students should create their application portal accounts for each college they applied to. Application portals will allow students to check the status of their application, and many schools will release admissions decisions through their portals.
SENIOR GRADES:
First quarter grades were sent in late-November to the colleges that our seniors applied to. Mid-year grades will be sent out automatically (there is no need to formally request) to all colleges in February... Senior grades do matter!
FINANCIAL AID:
The main responsibility of managing the financial aid process falls to the parents/guardians. You should work with colleges if you have questions about the financial aid process. Also, New York State provides tutorials and support f or families through the Higher Education Services Corporation commonly referred to HESC. Please refer to our handout on Financial Aid 101 for more detailed information.
2024-25 FAFSA and NYS Application for TAP: NEW DATE THIS YEAR - Opening no later than December 31st!!! (As of the publication of this newsletter, FAFSA has not yet opened.)
-
Create FSA ID: FSA IDs are created at studentaid.gov . Students should be encouraged to get their FSA ID before they sit down to complete the FAFSA. Students and parents must create 2 separate FSA IDs. Parents who applied for financial aid for an older child already have a FSA ID.
-
Complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) found at fafsa.gov, opening no later than December 31st for high school seniors planning to go to college next fall. The FAFSA is required for any family who wishes to apply for need-based financial aid.
-
Students who indicate they are applying to at least one NYS college or university should also complete the NYS application for TAP immediately upon completing the FAFSA. A link will be provided at the end of the FAFSA. TAP only allows you to add 1 NY College. A student must update their TAP application when they commit to a school to change that college if needed.
-
We encourage you to complete the FAFSA as soon as it opens to meet college deadlines and maximize their financial aid. Many colleges use FAFSA information to calculate amounts and types of aid students may qualify for, and each college has its own schedule for awarding financial aid.
Financial Aid Webinar and Events
-
HESC (New York State’s Financial Aid Agency) - FAFSA and TAP application completion webinars .
-
The SUNYs also provides multiple Virtual FAFSA Completion Workshops in both English and Spanish. Find details and registration information here .
CSS Profile Information
-
In addition to the FAFSA, many colleges also require the CSS Profile (which opened for 2024-2025 on October 1st).
-
Students need to log into their College Board account in order to access the CSS Profile application .
-
Here is a list of Colleges Requiring the CSS Profile .

Junior college planning meetings will begin in mid-January. We will be sending juniors instructions on how to set up their individual meeting after the holiday break. Families are also encouraged to schedule a meeting (after a student's initial college meeting) with their counselor to walk through the college selection process. This can be in person or virtual, depending on your preference. Please see the Class of 2025 Timeline for all upcoming dates and events.
COLLEGE VISITS/VIRTUAL OPPORTUNITIES :
Families are encouraged to explore colleges and set up college visits /virtual experiences over the course of the next nine months. Please keep in mind:
-
Students are typically on college campuses until mid-May and then back again in late August
-
Many families target the February and Spring breaks to begin their college visits - so book early!
Students should refer to college websites for details on campus visits, tours, and other information. Regardless if you make it to a campus in-person, it is still important for students to express interest to their prospective schools. Please refer to our handout on Demonstrating Interest for guidance on how to connect with schools.

(Some graphics and text may be distorted if viewed via email/text link.)WELCOME BACK This is our first newsletter of the 2023-2024 school year. Newsletters are sent out three times a year to keep parents apprised of guidance information and events. We have linked pertinent information to this newsletter (including a timeline for each grade), however our full library of handouts can be found on our website .All students are assigned a counselor, ideally for their entire high school experience. In addition, we try to keep siblings with the same counselor so families will only need one contact in our department. Although counselors get to know students best through frequent personal contacts, counselors gain a great deal of information about students through teacher reports, parent contact, student records, and participation in Group Guidance. By the senior year, guidance counselors are in a position to write a comprehensive recommendation for each student.
As we enter another school year, please know that your child's guidance counselor is here to support you in a variety of ways. School counselors provide services to all students – personal counseling, academic advising, test interpretation, record keeping, high school program planning, schedule changing, career planning, college placement, teacher liaison, and parent advisement. Students receive these services in varying amounts according to their needs. If you ever need anything, please feel free to reach out; we are here to support you and your children.
TIMELINES We recommend that you review the timeline that corresponds to your child’s grade level to stay up to date on the year’s events. Occasionally, dates may need to change and we will email families if this occurs.
PSATs / TEST PREP All juniors will be sitting for the NEW Digital PSAT on October 11, 2023. All other students will be on a delayed schedule that day. There is no fee for the PSATs. At this time students should have already completed a technology check with their school-issued Chromebook. Students can take a full length practice exam on their Chromebook using the Bluebook app. While no preparation is required for the PSATs, students can also create or use their Khan Academy account for free online test-prep for the PSAT. Khan Academy is the one test prep organization that is affiliated with the College Board. (Students who already know that they prefer the ACT can also find free prep on the ACT website: ACT Test Prep ). Please refer to an email that was sent from Kristy Emery on 9/18 for more detailed information.
We highly recommend that prior to taking the exam, students get a good night’s sleep, eat a hearty breakfast, and come prepared with their charged school Chromebook (students will not be able to use their own device/laptop), a pen or pencil, and optional calculator.
PSAT results should be available electronically in mid-November. Students and families are encouraged to reach out to their guidance counselor to develop an individual standardized test plan for college admissions.
The PSAT will be available to sophomores who wish to take it. Only sophomores who already completed the required Google form and who completed the technology check in Guidance will be allowed to sit for the PSAT on October 11th. All other sophomores will be on a 4-hour delay that day.
TESTING ACCOMMODATIONS FOR THE PSATs:
If your child receives testing accommodations in school, please have them check with their counselor to ensure that they are approved for testing accommodations for all College Board exams. Getting accommodations in school does NOT guarantee that a student will be approved by the College Board for testing accommodations. Students need to apply early as it can take up to 8 weeks to be approved for accommodations. Students only need to apply once during high school in order to be approved for testing accommodations.
CLASS OF 2024 GROUP GUIDANCE:
We are in the midst of Senior Group Guidance. Seniors will meet each E and 5 Day with their counselor to work on each component of the college application process. Seniors should also schedule individual meetings with their school counselor, as needed, throughout the college application process.
COLLEGE N’ COFFEE:
We will have a virtual Google Meet event for senior parents on October 20, 2023 at 8am. This informal event will be structured in a Q&A format and will allow parents to ask questions of the entire Guidance staff. You can use this link ( https://meet.google.com/ezt-eokd-wtp ) to join the meet that morning or stay tuned to your email for a reminder closer to the 20th.
FERPA WAIVER :
Very important: Before the Guidance Department can send out transcripts and letters of recommendations students must: (1) authorize FLHS to release their records (ie. transcript, letters, etc.) to the colleges they are applying to, and (2) choose whether or not to waive their FERPA rights regarding their letters of recommendation. While students completed a FERPA waiver on the Common Application, parents/guardians must also sign and return the FERPA Waiver . No documents will be sent from the FLHS Guidance Department before the waiver is completed.
COLLEGE VISITS :
College Visits are in full swing in the Guidance office! All throughout September and October College Admissions Officers will offer FL students virtual and in-person information sessions. While an updated list is available through Naviance we have here is the list as of 9/21. Senior participation is strongly encouraged as these visits contribute heavily to a student's demonstrated interest . Students should pre-register for information sessions through their Naviance account.
BRAG SHEET :
If you haven't already submitted your Brag Sheet for the Guidance Department, please do so at your earliest convenience. Please reach out to your child’s Guidance Counselor if you need the Brag Sheet questions.
ESSAY HELP:
Seniors who are looking for college essay help this fall are encouraged to access the FLHS Writing Center. Students can access the Writing Center courses 1-7. Additionally, Seniors also have the opportunity to sign up for a meeting with an English teacher to work on their college essays during the morning of the PSAT administration on October 11th. Here is the link to sign up.
NEW YORK STATE COLLEGE FEE WAIVERS:
**HOT OFF THE PRESSES!** Many colleges (including SUNYs/CUNYs) in NYS are offering college application fee waivers during the month of October (some year round). Please use this link to see more details.
SENIOR PARENT NIGHT:
In case you missed it: here is a link to Senior Parent Night that took place on September 28th. Please refer to the senior timeline for additional dates.
SENIOR PARENT FINANCIAL AID INFO:
Families are able to complete both the FAFSA ( NEW: opening in December this year) and the CSS Profile (already open!). Deadlines for completion vary from college to college.
Families will use the “prior-prior” year’s tax returns to complete the FAFSA. This means that financial aid packages and scholarships will be based on 2022 tax returns. Students who are applying Early Decision will likely have an earlier deadline for submitting financial aid forms. It is highly suggested that parents review every college’s financial aid and scholarship website as early as possible to ensure that all deadlines are met.
Due to the new FAFSA opening date this year, families are strongly encouraged to complete a school’s Net Price Calculator to help determine eligibility for financial aid.
FINANCIAL AID LINKS:

Many AP courses and upper-level courses also have summer assignments that can be found here .
WORKING PAPERS:
If a student needs working papers they should follow this process:
(1) Print the Working Papers Application online: here
(2) If prior to school starting a student should then contact the High School Guidance Receptionist, Samira Barghout sbarghout4240@bcsdny.org or at 914-241-6082 to check for a time when the application can be processed - or - once school starts they should bring the completed application to the Guidance Department for Ms. Barghout to process.

Summer is a great time for students to fulfill community service hours! Students are required to complete 20 hours of community service for graduation. Students can log their service hours here: Community Service Form .
AP SCORES:
AP scores were released in early July. Students should log into “My AP” through their College Board account in order to access scores. For more information please visit the College Board’s website at: https://apstudents.collegeboard.org/view-scores#/
SCHEDULE INFORMATION
Student schedules will be available on Monday, August 21st on the Synergy portal. The FLHS Guidance Department does not have access to creating or resetting passwords for portals for families. For assistance you must follow the instructions provided by the technology department.
*IMPORTANT* Dropping or Adding a Course:
If after reviewing your courses, a change is requested (not a level increase), students should use this form to communicate that request with their counselor. Please use your BCSD email account to complete the form. The deadline to request a course ch ange is Monday, August 28th.
-
Counselors cannot honor requests to be in a different section of a course or to have a different teacher.
-
Students should only request a different class, or request a class that is wrong/missing from their schedule.
-
Please note that requests to get into a class that is at capacity/closed cannot be honored. Also, please be aware that some changes may impact other courses. Once your schedule is changed it cannot be undone.
-
Due to the complexities of the block schedule, counselors are unable to accommodate changes to a different lunch period.
Please do not email your counselor in addition to submitting the Google form. The counselors are going through numerous requests and will get back to you as quickly as possible. It may take more than a day to process and respond. Please do not submit the Google form multiple times for the same request unless you have not heard back in several business days. Your counselor will respond to your request (via your student email) letting you know if the change is possible and/or when the change has been made. We sincerely appreciate your patience.
Override a Department Recommendation:
-
Override forms (to gain access to a higher level course then what a student was recommended for) were due in late June. At this time it is too late to request access to a higher level course.
Courses Canceled Due to Low Enrollment:
-
A course might be missing from your schedule (with or without another course in its place). Please know that there are a handful of classes that will not be offered this year due to low enrollment. In some cases, an alternative course was substituted for the original request. Here is a list of courses that will not be offered in the 2023-2024 school year:
-
English 4: Sports Literature
-
English 4: Race and Gender in Literature
-
Conversational Italian
-
Multimedia Streaming
-
African American History
-
Accounting
-
Astronomy
-
Master Schedule Development:
-
Keep in mind that the master schedule is a complicated and constantly evolving process. A course might have been canceled and in some cases a course might not work in your schedule. Every attempt is made over the summer to get students as many of their original course requests as possible.
-
Developing a master schedule for a high school building is complex and we additionally appreciate your understanding and acceptance of your schedule as is, where possible. Of course, if there is a major issue with your schedule (ie. you are missing a required course) we will want to rectify the problem immediately.
Add/Drop Deadlines:
As the year progresses please keep in mind these important deadlines:
-
September 15 - Add deadline: last day to add a class/last year to request a schedule change
-
October 10 - Drop deadline: last day to drop a class (full year and 1st semester courses)
-
November 13 - Course Level Change deadline: last day to change a course level (from a higher level course to a lower level course)
-
January 22 - Start of 2nd Semester classes
-
February 1 - Add deadline: last day to add a second semester course
-
February 9 - Drop deadline: last day to drop a second semester course
TIMELINES
We recommend that you review the timeline that corresponds to your child’s grade level to stay up to date on the year’s events. Occasionally, dates may need to change and we will email families if this occurs.

Testing Accommodations for the PSATs:
If your child receives testing accommodations in school, please check with your counselor to ensure that you applied for testing accommodations for all College Board exams. Getting accommodations in school does NOT guarantee that a student will be approved by the College Board for testing accommodations. Students need to apply early, as the College Board states that it can take up to 8 weeks to be approved for accommodations. Students only need to apply once during high school in order to be approved for testing accommodations.

SENIOR PARENT REMINDERS COLLEGE DECISIONS:The National Enrollment Deposit Deadline is May 1st - College-bound seniors need to deposit at ONE college by May 1st. For seniors who have not yet made a choice yet: most schools will have both in person and virtual events for accepted students. Seniors should take part in those events to help make the decision that is best for them. Seniors who intend to defer their acceptance and/or would like to consider a gap or PG year should let their counselor know so we can work together on a plan. Schools will have a process for requesting a deferral which would need to take place prior to May 1.
We will celebrate college decision day on Monday, May 1st with a special senior lunch provided by senior parents. Seniors can celebrate their college choice by wearing college gear to school on May 1st. We will be celebrating all choices on May 1st regardless of a student’s chosen path. Mrs. Pirro will be emailing seniors more information about that day soon. Go Seniors!
Once students have heard back from all of their colleges and have finalized their plans for next year, they should update Naviance with their college results. They should log into Naviance and either follow the directions to complete the “Graduation Survey” (that was emailed to all seniors on 4/10/23), or they can click on the "edit" pencil to let us know what decisions they received, and to set their college choice for next year. By setting an attending school in Naviance we will send a final transcript to that college (prior to July 1st). No additional request needs to be made by a student for a final transcript .
FOURTH QUARTER REMINDERS:
Senior grades continue to matter! Just a reminder that all college acceptances are conditional on comparable grades from the time of a student’s application. Seniors: Please don't put yourself in a situation where you get a "what happened???" letter from your intended college.
FINANCIAL AID:Financial Aid packages should have also been sent to seniors at this time.
COMMUNITY SERVICE:Seniors are required to complete 20 hours of community service for graduation. Students can log their service hours here: COMMUNITY SERVICE FORM . ASPIRE students must submit their hours prior to leaving on their senior internship.
JUNIOR PARENT REMINDERS
STANDARDIZED TESTING:
Junior Group Guidance sessions just wrapped up after 11 sessions! In our last session, we shared a Junior Spring Checklist with items for juniors to focus on over the next few months.
With that said, you shouldn't assume that standardized testing will be optional at all schools next year. Check individual college websites for the most up to date information. Please make sure you register for the SAT or ACT if you haven't done so already.
PARENT BRAG SHEET:In early March, parents of Juniors received an email titled, “Parent Brag Sheet.” We ask that you please respond to these Brag Sheet questions by June 1st, as your child’s counselor will use the information you provide to inform their comprehensive letter of recommendation for your child. If you have any questions, please reach out to your child’s counselor.
STUDENT QUESTIONNAIRE:
We also emailed all juniors in early March a student questionnaire to complete. If your child has not already completed the Student Questionnaire, they must do so by May 1st.

FRESHMAN PARENT REMINDERS
It is difficult to imagine we are nearing the end of your child’s 9th grade year! We hope that the transition for our newest Foxes went as smooth as possible and that your students found any necessary support from your school counselor. The School Counseling team has enjoyed getting to know the class of 2026 through our Freshman Guidance sessions and individual meetings.
They should have also joined our Class of 2026 Group Guidance Google Classroom. They can email their counselor if they are missing the join code.
WORKING PAPERS
The FLHS Guidance Receptionist, Ms. Barghout, processes working papers. Students can either pick up a paper application in the front of guidance or print out a copy from our website: https://www.bcsdny.org/Page/2319 . Once completed, students should submit the application to Ms. Barghout in the guidance department. Spring is a very busy time for working papers - don’t delay! Please allow up to 2 school days for working papers to be processed - so students shouldn’t wait until the last minute!
STUDENT SUMMER JOB OPPORTUNITIES: Students can view the bulletin board by the front door of Guidance with opportunities for jobs and community service events. Additionally, Mrs. Pirro includes various summer opportunities in her daily email to students.

SENIOR PARENT REMINDERS ED/EA DECISIONS:College decisions are really starting to roll in! If a student was accepted through an ED program (yeah!) they will need to IMMEDIATELY withdraw from any other college that they submitted an application to.
NAVIANCE UPDATES:Many deadlines have now passed, however for any remaining schools (January 1, 15, February 1, or Rolling) students should have completed transcript requests in Naviance at this point.
FINANCIAL AID:In case you missed it… below are the steps for applying for Financial Aid that were posted on the last newsletter.
-
Families are able to complete both the FAFSA and the CSS Profile beginning October 1, 2022. Deadlines for completion vary from college to college but October 1st is the universal start date.
-
Families will use the “prior-prior” year’s tax returns to complete the FAFSA. This means that financial aid packages and scholarships will be based on 2021 tax returns. Students who are applying Early Decision, Early Action, or Priority will likely have a deadline for submitting financial aid forms by November. It is highly suggested that parents review every college’s financial aid and scholarship website as early as possible to ensure that all deadlines are met.
FINANCIAL AID LINKS:
FAFSA (this form is required by all colleges)
CSS PROFILE (this form is required by many but not all colleges)
Colleges Requiring the CSS Profile
LOCAL SCHOLARSHIPS:The local scholarship packet will be available on the FLHS Guidance website in early January. The deadline to apply is February 1st. There will be a basket in Guidance to turn them in. No late applications will be accepted, so please apply early to avoid any last minute issues.
JUNIOR PARENT REMINDERS
STANDARDIZED TESTING:
Now that your child’s PSATs scores have been released on Naviance and on your child’s College Board account, we have attached a video which will walk you through understanding PSAT scores: PSAT Video . Alternatively families can review this handout: Understanding your PSAT Scores .
If they do not already have one, students should create a College Board account at www.collegeboard.org using the email address they used on their PSAT answer sheet (NOT their BCSD email). The scores should automatically be filtered into their account this way. Students are also encouraged to make a Khan Academy account at www.khanacademy.org using that same email address. Linking Khan Academy to their College Board account by following these instructions will customize free test prep for students based on their PSAT results (highly recommended!) .
The Guidance Department will forward emails from test prep companies in our community. We have also compiled a list of local test prep companies that you can access on our website . Fox Lane High School does not endorse any particular test prep company. Families should discuss what options will work best for them.
As a reminder here are links for free SAT and ACT Prep:
Free SAT prep (Khan Academy)
Free ACT prep (Kaplan)
SAT vs. ACT: Students should consult with their counselor to develop an individual standardized test plan, and should then register as soon as possible at either www.collegeboard.org or at www.act.org depending on their plan. For an overview of the standardized testing options you can review this Standardized Testing Handout .
Testing Accommodations: If you are approved for testing accommodations through the College Board, remember to enter your SSD number when you register. If you receive testing accommodations in school, and would like to request accommodations for the ACT, please email your counselor as per the ACT instructions after you register.
Test Fee Waivers: If you receive Free or Reduced Lunch please reach out to your counselor for a fee waiver.
COLLEGE MEETINGS:Junior college planning meetings will begin in mid-January. We will be sending juniors instructions on how to set up their individual meeting after the holiday break. Families are also encouraged to schedule a meeting (after a student's initial college meeting) with their counselor to walk through the college selection process. This can be in person or virtual, depending on your preference. Please see the Class of 2024 Timeline for all upcoming dates and events.
COLLEGE VISITS/VIRTUAL OPPORTUNITIES:Families are encouraged to explore colleges and set up college visits/virtual experiences over the course of the next nine months. Please keep in mind:
-
Students are typically on college campuses until mid-May and then back again in late August
-
Many families target the February and Spring breaks to begin their college visits
Students should refer to college websites for details on campus visits, tours, and other information. Regardless if you make it to a campus in-person, it is still important for students to express interest to their prospective schools. Please refer to our handout on Demonstrating Interest for guidance on how to connect with schools.
